Senarai barangan runcit, senarai lagu Spotify, senarai filem terbaik Netflix, senarai buku untuk dibaca, senarai ahli keluarga dan rakan-rakan untuk dihubungi. Hidup kita dikelilingi oleh senarai, lebih-lebih lagi dalam suasana kecemasan seperti sekarang. 

Dalam diri kita pernah terkandung seribu satu jenis senarai yang kita tidak sedar: senarai kekasih lama, senarai guru sekolah, senarai susu kegemaran, senarai soda kegemaran, senarai filem kegemaran, senarai rumah jiran di kampung, senarai posisi tidur yang disukai, senarai kartun yang ditonton dari kecik sehingga besar, senarai orang yang dibenci, senarai kawan lama yang dibalas dendam, dan sebagainya. 

Bagaimana pula dengan perkataan? Itu juga suatu senarai yang membentuk keperibadia seseorang. Bagi penulis, senarai perkataan adalah ibarat senarai paku dan tukul di dalam bengkel. Tetapi penulis pun tidak menghafal semua perkataan. Ada sejumlah perkataan sahaja yang akan sering diulang guna sehingga ia menjadi identiti gaya penulisannya. 

Saya akan kongsikan beberapa senarai yang pernah dibuat oleh tokoh terkenal. Pertama ialah senarai ahli falsafah Perancis, Roland Barthes, yang dibuatnya pada tahun 1977 dalam buku berjudul Rolande Barthes.

J' AIME, JE N'AIME PAS - I LIKE, I DON'T LIKE 

I like: salad, cinnamon, cheese, pimento, marzipan, the smell of new-cut hay (why doesn't someone with a "nose" make such a perfume), roses peonies, lavender, champagne, loosely held political convictions, Glenn Gould, too-cold beer, flat pillows, toast, Havana cigars, Handel, slow walks, pears, white peaches, cherries, colors, watches, all kinds of writing pens, deserts, unrefined salt, realistic novels, the piano, coffee, Pollock, Twombly, all romantic music, Sartre, Brecht, Verne, Fourier, Einstein, trains, Medoc wine, having change, Bouvard and Pecuchet, walking in sandals on the lanes of southwest France, the bend of the Adour seen from Doctor L. 's house, the Marx brothers, the mountains at seven in the morning leaving Salamanca, etc. 

I don't like: white Pomeranians, women in slacks, geraniums, strawberries, the harpsichord, Miro, tautologies, animated cartoons, Arthur Rubinstein, villas, the afternoon, Satie, Bartok, Vivaldi, telephoning, children's house, Chopin's concertos, Burgundian branles and Renaissance dances, the organ, Marc-Antoine Charpanetier, his trumpets and kettledrums, the politico-sexual, scenes, initiatives, fidelity, spontaneity, evenings with people I don't know, etc.

Pada bulan  Oktober 1947, Mohandas Gandhi memberikan sehelai kertas kepada cucu lelakinya yang datang melawat. Arun Gandhi kemudian pulang ke Afrika Selatan bersama kertas itu dan dia tidak pernah menemui datuknya lagi. Tiga bulan kemudian Gandhi dibunuh. Dalam kertas yang diberikan itu mengandungi senarai Tujuh Dosa Sosial.

Puisi juga menggunakan senarai sebagai kaedah untuk menghubungkan imej. Baha Zain memberikan senarai objek yang sering terkandung dalam kehidupan moden manusia di kota.

F. Scott Fitzgerald ialah pengarang kepada buku klasik The Great Gastby. Pada tahun 1933, dia mengirimkan sepucuk surat kepada anak perempuannya berusia 11 tahun yang berada di kem jauh daripada keluarganya. Ia mengandungi senarai perkara yang patut/tidak patut dirisaukan dalam hidup.

(A) Scholarship

(B) Do I really understand about people and am I able to get along with them?

(C) Am I trying to make my body a useful instrument or am I neglecting it?
