A Reason To Read Literature

Do you ever wonder the reason you read literature, or watch a film, or listen to music? Art is there everyday in our lives. We see it, we hear it, and most importantly, we feel its existence. The world, reality, is a normal place where we actualize our existence. The world is our own individual world. The world is how we perceive it and how we want it to influence our life. We live alone in the world, in reality. That is why we escape into art, into literature for me, to search the existence of other people whom we will never meet in the real world for time is short, for our life is short, for God will come and take us away from this existence before we even had the chance to understand who we are and what the world is. So, if you were to ask me what is the reason to read literature, I could give you plenty of reasons; some are personal matters which I alone would be able to appreciate it; but there is one reason that I believe we all share whenever we encounter a work art, and that is to meet other people.

The world is a mirror of our existence. But we rarely look into it, not because we don’t want to, but because we don’t know what to look for. In art, especially literature, we meet other people, the author and the characters, who will remind us of who we are, who will remind us that there is more to life than just ourselves, who will remind us that we are not alone in this world, and that as long as we understand ourselves, we will survive.
