"Style and structure are the essence of a book; great ideas are hogwash."


Ideas are just ideas at the hand of a mediocre writer. It is like watching Casablanca without Ingrid Bergman.

I wouldn't want to read something that has absolutely nothing in it -- however brilliant the style and structure might be in presenting that nothingness. It's just a total waste of time. Great styles and structures are just empty shells in the hands of great writers with no ideas.

Good writing must always balance the two. Undermining the importance of ideas in the extremity, I'm sorry to say, is absurd.
